Self-Help

Good news!  Where once self-help was derided as a serious or effective method of gaining relief from psychological problems, modern research shows that a self-help approach can be very successful.

Certainly some people still require the close support and supervision of a mental health specialist, but likewise online programs are proving their value across a range of issues:  depression, anxiety, weight loss, smoking cessation, relationship problems, chronic pain, etc.

And the aim of all help is to support you toward self reliance in any case!

In choosing a self-help program, it's really important that you choose one that has been proven in clinical trials.  New-age methods are not generally successful and can result in wasted time, money and effort, and can even do damage.

Likewise not every "conventional" treatment is worthwhile.  Talk therapy is all but useless in most cases, and the "gold standard" of therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy, has almost no scientific proof behind.  In fact some studies show it to be no better than placebo.

It's worth noting that testimonials should never be regarded as evidence.  For instance there are many testimonials regarding the use of hypnosis to quit smoking.  But when you examine actual scientific trials, you see that less than 1% of people give up smoking by using hypnosis.

It's very easy to get fooled by a long list of testimonials, so remember that testimonials don't provide proof, and that professional therapists NEVER use them because that would be a breach of the client-therapist relationship.

So the bottom line is, we encourage you to use a self-help approach to quit smoking, and at the same time we urge you to examine your chosen treatment method carefully to make sure you select a proven method, with good support facilities.
